Karen Garcia-Ceniseros is a junior at The University of Texas at Austin where she is majoring in Special Education. Her interest in special education began in high school when she and other students integrated students with disabilities into a robotics team and later helped them create a league of their own. This experience grew her interest in teaching students with disabilities in order to help them reach their full potential both inside and outside of classrooms. In college, Karen was able to further expand this goal when she was given the opportunity to study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa, during the maymester of 2018. While abroad she learned about Cape Town’s culture and the inequalities students of both color and disabilities faced when living in its underrepresented areas. This further inspired her to continue working with students with disabilities and encourage others to see the importance of providing them with equal educational and health care opportunities.
